talented actors

I fell in adoration with Catherine McClements when she played Goldie on Water Rats, and each time I see her work my admiration grows. Her acting seems so realistic, and her range so wide - sad, strong, happy, vulnerable, flirty, sarcastic, warm, stand-offish... Having seen nearly everything she's done on screen I can't say it's all brilliant, but she does consistent good work. And she's gorgeous! 'Dame Ruth' was a wonderful actress and a brilliant comedienne. She also had a beautiful personality with a wonderful attitude towards life and was truly admired by all. Unfortunately I never had the chance to see her on stage, but I will always remember her in Mother and Son, as will millions around the world. I was so shocked when she died - it had always seemed as though she would just go on forever. I'm sure she will, in the hearts of all those who worked with her, watched her and loved her, and also through her books, which are a great read.

I know I've said it for all actors on this page, but Claudia Karvan is gorgeous as well as talented - I guess that's what makes them all so successful. Dating the Enemy is one of my favourite films, I've watched it too many times to count. I love how she gets to play the male macho character for most of the film, it's so funny! I saw her in High Tide, when she was just a teenager and her career was just starting. I also love Strange Planet as that's a totally different character again. I enjoy a lot of her stuff, and a special mention has to go to the telemovie Never Say Never as it's just such an inpspiring story. And of course The Secret Life of Us is just such a funky series.

I remember seeing Josephine Byrnes in Brides of Christ many years ago and I was absolutely in love with that series (still am). It's a wonderful production, with a realistic and beautiful script and some really superb performances - everything seems to fit together perfectly to create a show which will be remembered. Josephine is another gorgeous Australian actress and I really liked her performance in Waiting at the Royal, plus her character in Oscar and Lucinda was hilarious! She guest-starred in a few episodes of the final season of Water Rats and those were the eps when I thought the show was perfectly back on track.

I fell head-over-heels in love with Jennifer Ehle (as well as Colin Firth) in Pride and Prejudice. Her portrayal of Elizabeth Bennett was almost perfect. She was vibrant, cheeky, fun and always smiling; but she also portrayed so well the angry, prejudiced, opinionated side of Elizabeth. To me she will always be Lizzy. So I have admired her for a while, but I've also admired her in other productions. Bedrooms and Hallways was rather an interesting one. But my other favourite is Paradise Road which is such a beautiful film, and the story of Jennifer's character was so devastatingly sad.

Katharine Hepburn is of course a true legend in the film industry. Just the fact that she is still widely admired today, I think says something about her talent, not to mention her beauty. Her auto-biography is really comforting to read - it's like sitting down with Katharine Hepburn and having a chat and a cup of coffee. I have seen so many of her films that I have lost count. Two of my favourites are Desk Set and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. One of my all time favourite KH scenes is from Bringing up Baby, where she loses the heel of her shoe - it's absolutely hilarious!

With every new tv show obsession there comes a collection of new actors to admire. And when The West Wing took a hold on my life, I was much taken by Allison Janney. Apart from her tall, elegant good looks and her stunning red-carpet dress sense, she's also a really good actor. Her role on TWW has a lot of depth and she also does great comedy - gotta love her in Ten Things I Hate About You!
